TRAVEL REPORT TO THE ANNUAL CONGRESS OF THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX EPISCOPATE OF AMERICA
SEPTEMBER 5, 2025 – CHICAGO
By the mercy and blessing of Almighty God, this year we were able to attend the Congress of our Episcopate in Chicago, on September 5, 2025. For many, the very word “Congress” may sound formal, evoking matters of logistics and administration. Indeed, part of our time was devoted to numbers, budgets, salaries, investments, and other concerns necessary for the good order of the Episcopate. Yet, in my view, this aspect was far less significant than the truly grace-filled and historic moments that unfolded this year.
All of this took place within a unique and rare setting. As we know, the grace of God works through His bishops and priests, the successors of the holy Apostles. This year the gathering was a beautiful and abundant “bouquet”: His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel, Archbishop of Detroit and of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America; His Grace Bishop Andrei, Bishop of Cleveland and Auxiliary Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America; Mother Gabriela, Abbess of the Dormition of the Mother of God Monastery in Rives Junction; together with a large assembly of priests and their delegates—over 131 souls in all.This spiritual bouquet was further adorned by the fragrance of holiness brought by the holy relics of our mother among the saints, Saint Olga of Alaska, which greatly enriched the entire Congress.
Through this great and holy assembly, the grace of the Holy Spirit worked in a wondrous way, bringing a spirit of divine wisdom that was felt throughout these blessed days. It shone forth in the beautiful hierarchical services, and most sublimely in the Holy Sacrifice of the Divine Liturgy, where we were united to Christ through the most pure Body and most precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. And then, like the apostolic preaching that followed Pentecost, came the word of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel as he formally presented the motion for the canonization of our beloved Father Roman Braga. An example of love, humility, and divine wisdom, Father Roman offered his entire life to God, remaining steadfast in the true Faith even in the face of the most cruel and demonic tortures. Later he proclaimed with rare joy and love the gifts of God to our brethren here in America, becoming himself a living icon of forgiveness—even of those who had tormented him. Truly like a saint, Father Roman Braga deserves our deepest veneration and to be honored in our hearts, in our calendars, and in our churches. The promulgation of this motion will remain a historic milestone, through which the word of His Eminence offered us a glimpse of the infinite wisdom of God.
The Congress was also crowned by another moment of grave and urgent importance: the discussion of a sorrowful reality in our own country, Canada—the ever-growing presence of MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying). This great evil, deceptively presented as a mercy to those in suffering, hides in truth the ugliness of the world, seeking to steal from as many as possible the very possibility of salvation. This moral falsehood is among the most dreadful works of the Evil One in our day.
The reality is simple and sobering: those who resort to MAID, rejecting the gift and grace of God, voluntarily renounce the Kingdom of Heaven and the hope of eternal life. We, in this spiritual space, must remember that our supreme goal is life everlasting in the Kingdom of God—not the self-chosen condemnation of eternal torment in the deepest parts of hades. Under the guidance of God, delegates from the Orthodox parishes of Canada brought this issue before the Episcopate, the Congress, all the Romanian Orthodox parishes in America, and a representative of the Orthodox Church in America. They proposed a motion to begin the necessary steps to address this challenge at an official level, with language both powerful and pastorally wise, spiritually discerning the true nature of this evil in our midst.
We hope and pray that a clear response and needed guidance will soon be forthcoming. For this we need the prayers of all, that the Lord may hasten the process and grant help to those who are in danger.
In conclusion—better said, in sharing the grace of these blessed days—I bear witness to this: being physically present in this holy gathering, surrounded by sister parishes from across the entire North American continent, we truly felt that we are not alone. We are all members of the one Body of the Church, and the fact that our parish is small in numbers in no way diminished the importance of our presence. Our voice carried the same weight as that of the other parishes. And now, to be able to bring home to you the good and historic tidings in which, through us, you have all taken part, is both a privilege and an honor.
Beloved faithful and members of the Romanian Orthodox Church of Saint Hierarch Varlaam and Pious Mother Parascheva, remain steadfast in hope and labor with joy in fulfilling the will of God on this land which only recently received the good seed of the Orthodox Faith, yet which, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, is already enriched and ever growing within the Holy Church through the ministry of His priests.
Through the prayers of the Holy Fathers; of the Most Holy, Ever-Virgin Mary, the Birth giver of God; of Saint Varlaam; of our Pious Mother Parascheva; and of our Father Roman Braga—may our Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us and save us, together with all the peoples of America, Canada, and Romania, and indeed of the whole world, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

RAPORT DE CĂLĂTORIE LA CONGRESUL ANUAL AL EPISCOPIEI ORTODOXE ROMÂNE DIN AMERICA

Binecuvântați de Bunul Dumnezeu, în acest an am ajuns la congresul episcopiei noastre din Chicago, pe data de 5 septembrie 2025. Pentru mulți, acest nume poate suna formal, cu rezonanțe logistice și diplomatice. Într-adevăr, pe de o parte, am discutat despre numere, bugete, salarii, investiții și alte situații legate de buna organizare a episcopiei. Totuși, această parte este, din punctul meu de vedere, mai puțin semnificativă în comparație cu cele cu adevărat binecuvântate și de o greutate istorică ce au avut loc anul acesta.
Toate acestea s-au petrecut într-un context unic și rar. După cum știm, Harul lui Dumnezeu lucrează prin episcopii și preoții Săi, urmașii apostolilor. Anul acesta am avut un buchet frumos și numeros: Înaltpreasfințitul Nathaniel, Arhiepiscop de Detroit și al Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America; Preasfințitul Andrei, Episcop de Cleveland și episcop-vicar al Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America; Maica Gabriela, stareța Mănăstirii Adormirea Maicii Domnului din Rives Junction; și un sobor de zeci de preoți împreună cu delegații lor – în total peste 131 de suflete. Acest buchet a fost îmbogățit de mireasma duhovnicească adusă de sfintele moaște ale Maicii noastre Olga din Alaska, care au îmbogățit mult adunarea congresului.
Prin acest sobor mare, Harul Duhului Sfânt a lucrat în chip minunat și a adus un spirit de înțelepciune dumnezeiască simțit pe toată durata acestor zile. El s-a arătat în frumoasele slujbe arhierești, în sublimul dar al Sfintei Jertfe Liturgice prin împărtășirea cu Preacuratul Trup și Preacinstitul Sânge al Domnului nostru Iisus Hristos. Apoi, asemenea cuvântului propovăduitor al Apostolilor după Cincizecime, a fost cuvântul Înaltpreasfințitului Nathaniel, când a promulgat moțiunea pentru canonizarea Părintelui nostru drag, Roman Braga. Exemplu de dragoste, smerenie și înțelepciune dumnezeiască, el și-a oferit întreaga viață lui Dumnezeu, neabătându-se de la credința adevărată chiar și în fața celor mai cumplite și demonice torturi. Mai apoi a propovăduit cu bucurie și dragoste rar întâlnită darurile lui Dumnezeu către frații noștri de pe meleagurile Americii, fiind un exemplu frumos de iertare și binecuvântarea chiar a torționarilor săi. Ca un adevărat sfânt, Părintele Roman Braga merită toată smerenia noastră și să fie pus la loc de cinste în inimile, calendarele și bisericile noastre. Promulgarea acestei moțiuni a intrat adânc în istorie, împărtășind prin cuvântul Înaltpreasfințitului Nathaniel o mică frântură din înțelepciunea infinită a lui Dumnezeu.
Congresul a fost încununat și de un alt moment important: abordarea unei probleme urgente și apăsătoare pentru țara noastră, Canada. Este vorba despre situația tristă a MAID, care s-a infiltrat tot mai mult în sistemul nostru și este oferită cu ușurință oamenilor din toate categoriile de vârstă, sociale și de sănătate. Acest mare rău este prezentat ca o binefacere și o îngrijire a celor necăjiți, aflați în durere și neputință. Dar în realitate, sub această mască se ascunde urâciunea lumii, care dorește să fure mișelește de la cât mai mulți posibilitatea mântuirii. Această minciună morală este una dintre cele mai cumplite lucrări ale celui rău în zilele noastre.
Realitatea este simpla, cei ce recurg la acest MAID (Asistență Medicală pentru Moarte – AMM), renunță la Rai si la posibilitatea mântuirii, respingând darurile si Harul lui Dumnezeu voluntar. Noi, in acest spațiu duhovnicesc trebuie sa știm ca ultimul, supremul nostru scop este viața veșnică in Împărăția lui Dumnezeu, iar nu alegerea osândei veșnice in chinurile cele mai de jos. Sub îndrumarea lui Dumnezeu, delegați ai parohiilor ortodoxe din Canada au adus această problemă în fața Episcopiei, Congresului, tuturor parohiilor Ortodoxe Române din America și reprezentantului OCA. Ei au propus moțiunea de a începe demersurile necesare pentru a aborda această provocare la un nivel oficial, cu un limbaj plin de putere și cu îndrumare duhovnicească, potrivit modelată pentru acest rău prezent printre noi.
Nădăjduim că răspunsul și ghidul necesar vor veni cât mai curând. Pentru aceasta, însă, avem nevoie de rugăciunile tuturor, ca Dumnezeu să grăbească procesul și să ofere ajutor celor aflați în pericol.
În încheierea acestui raport — sau mai bine zis, a acestei împărtășiri a sentimentelor trăite în aceste câteva zile binecuvântate — doresc să mărturisesc următoarele: fiind prezenți fizic în acest cadru, înconjurați de toate parohiile surori de pe întreg continentul nord-american, am simțit cu adevărat că nu suntem singuri. Toți facem parte dintr-un trup mare al Bisericii, iar faptul că suntem o parohie mai mică numeric nu a diminuat cu nimic importanța prezenței noastre. Cuvântul nostru a avut aceeași greutate ca și cel al celorlalte parohii. Iar faptul că acum putem fi vocea tuturor membrilor în fața Congresului și, în același timp, să aducem acasă veștile cele bune și istorice, la care, prin noi, voi toți ați participat, este un privilegiu și o onoare.
Iubiți credincioși și membri ai Bisericii Ortodoxe Române „Sfântul Ierarh Varlaam” și „Cuvioasa Maica Parascheva”, rămâneți cu nădejde și lucrați cu bucurie voia lui Dumnezeu pe acest tărâm care doar de curând a primit sămânța cea bună a credinței, dar care se îmbogățește și crește neîncetat prin harul Duhului Sfânt, în Sfânta Biserică și prin slujirea preoților Săi.
Pentru rugăciunile Sfinților Părinți, ale Preasfintei și Pururea Fecioare Maria, Născătoarea de Dumnezeu, ale Sfântului Varlaam, ale Maicii noastre Parascheva și ale Părintelui nostru Roman Braga, să ne miluiască și să ne mântuiască pe noi și întregul popor american, canadian și român, precum și toate neamurile, acum și pururea și în vecii vecilor.
